Soccer City in Johannesburg, which will host the opening match at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ as well as the Final, was built in 1987 and was originally known as the FNB Stadium, but it has undergone a major upgrade ahead of this year’s showpiece. Located in the south-west of the city, it is only a short distance from the football-crazy township of Soweto. It hosted the first mass rally of Nelson Mandela following his release from prison in 1990 and staged the 1996 CAF Africa Cup of Nations final in which South Africa beat Tunisia.
