Italian federation opens new scandal inquiry (AP)

ROME (AP)—The Italian soccer federation has opened a new investigation into
the four-year-old match-fixing scandal that has shaken some of its top clubs.

The federation issued a statement Wednesday saying it would seek documents
from a criminal trial in Naples after revelations allegedly linking Inter Milan

soccer. Besides Juventus, three other major clubs—AC Milan, Lazio and
Fiorentina—were penalized. Reggina and Arezzo were also punished.

Players, coaches demand inquiry into Wembley field (AP)

LONDON (AP)—Soccer players and managers say the field at Wembley is dangerous
and they want an investigation.

Players repeatedly slipped during last weekend’s FA Cup semifinals. The
field has been reset 10 times since the stadium reopened in 2007.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp says the field is dangerous and must be
replaced again. Players’ union representative Gordon Taylor urges an
investigation.

There are fears players could get hurt in the May 15 FA Cup final between
Chelsea and Portsmouth and the May 30 exhibition game between England and Mexico
leading to the World Cup.

The governing Football Association says it understands the frustrations. It
adds that Wembley poses a “unique challenge” because it is a multipurpose
stadium.
