Atlanta Beat Host Chicago Red Stars Looking For Second Straight Win (Goal.com)

The Atlanta Beat will host Wednesday’s match against the Chicago Red Stars. This is the fourth and final game between the two teams this year.  So far the Beat have their best record, 1-0-2, against the Chicago Red Stars.

The teams last met in Chicago on July 7, ending in a 1-1 tie. The Chicago Red Stars (4-5-5, 17 points) are currently in a fourth place tie with the Washington Freedom and are hoping to hold their spot at in WPS standings to qualify for postseason play.

Both the Atlanta Beat (2-7-4, 10 points) and the Chicago Red Stars are coming off of wins against Sky Blue FC. The Red Stars continued their four-game unbeaten streak on July 10, winning 2-0 over the reigning champs; Atlanta topped the Piscataway, N.J., based club on the road, 1-0, which led to the dismissal of Sky Blue FC coach Pauliina Miettinen.

“Things have gone our way [in the standings], but we need to hold up our end of the bargain by getting the results when we play,” said Red Stars coach Omid Namazi. ”These results in our favor won’t mean anything if we don’t get a win in Atlanta.”

Kickoff at KSU Soccer Stadium in Kennesaw, Ga., is at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Del Bosque: Looking for improvement

Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque admits he would have liked to have seen his team secure a more comfortable win over Paraguay.

The European Champions saw off their quarter-final opponents 1-0 courtesy of a late David Villa goal on Saturday to set up a World Cup last-four clash against Germany.

But Del Bosque admits his side were forced to battle hard for their win, and were denied sufficient possession by the South American team.

Possession

“We didn’t play well mainly because we didn’t get enough of the ball,” said Del Bosque.

“There were good things but we weren’t as at ease in possession as in other games and it’s important to be comfortable.

“It has been a very tough, very uncomfortable match but this is what we expected – they didn’t let us play our game.

“In my time a Spanish side never felt so uncomfortable or passed the ball so inaccurately.”

Despite his disappointment, Del Bosque is confident his side have what it takes to overcome the Germans, who sealed their spot in the semi-finals with a commanding 4-0 win over Argentina.

“It’s an absolutely marvellous moment for Spanish football and our game is at the very top,” he added.

“We didn’t play a terribly good match today but we are happy and we know we have the necessary resources to face any rival including Germany.

“It’s a great moment for Spanish football. We beat Germany in the final of the Euros but they are among the elite teams and I think that speaks volumes for European football.”

Tribute

Del Bosque paid tribute to Spain’s goalkeeper Iker Casillas and to Villa, who is now the top scorer of the tournament with five goals.

“Casillas has been extraordinary and he made two magnificent stops tonight,” he added.

“Villa is at the top of his form and was right there again – perhaps we could have scored earlier but Villa had the hunger.”

Argentina’s Carlos Tevez Looking To Hit First Goal In South Africa (Goal.com)

Although Argentina striker Carlos Tevez is happy with his first two performances at the World Cup, there is one statistic which he is desperate to change.

“I am still missing a goal,” admitted the Manchester City star, who has impressed for both club and country this season.

“And not converting always annoys me, it’s a low blow. But neither am I going to drive myself crazy thinking about it. The most important thing is that the team plays well,” Carlitos added in Friday’s press conference.

Tevez has been one of the most impressive players in the opening Albiceleste games against Nigeria and South Korea, living up to his reputation as a team player who never stops working for the good of the side.

Goal.com bestowed on the player a rating of 7 against the Koreans, stating: “Everyone knows to expect nothing but 100 per cent commitment from Tevez, and that’s exactly what Diego Maradona got from the Manchester City man.”

And the former Manchester United and West Ham striker says he’s pleased with how the team are performing, explaining: “There is lots of tranquility around the team, we are feeling serene. We know that we have to continue on the same track and not gift anything.”

The ever humble Carlitos added though that he wants to avoid Argentina being labelled as favourites.

“I hope they do not say we are candidates, and that we progress with a low profile, as we did coming to this World Cup. This way I think we can still shock a few people.”

Chile coach Bielsa looking for WCup redemption (PA SportsTicker)

By MARK WALSH Associated Press Writer

NELSPRUIT, South Africa(AP)—Chile coach Marcelo Bielsa is looking to redeem himself at the World Cup after failing to take his native Argentina through the group stage of the 2002 tournament.

Bielsa says his previous experience as Argentina coach would have no bearing on this campaign.

He says “eight years have gone by and they are totally different experiences. I’m older, that’s the only change in me since then.”

The coach known as “El Loco” – the Crazy One – led Chile over Honduras 1-0 Wednesday to break the country’s 48-year winless streak at the World Cup.

Bielsa says “our objective is to write new records and be remembered.”

Bielsa earned his nickname for his intense manner and he doesn’t seem to mind the tag.

“It’s a fair name I’ve been given because of some of the more exaggerated aspects of my personality,” he said.

Bielsa has rebuilt his coaching reputation since becoming Chile boss in 2007 and taking the national team to second place behind Brazil in the South American qualifiers for this World Cup.

Chile fans at the match against Honduras on Wednesday unfurled a giant banner before kick off reading “Marcelo Bielsa: Chile thanks you” – proof of the regard in which he is held.

It’s not just soccer fans who have fallen for the Argentine. In April, former president Michelle Bachelet told a TV program about Bielsa’s life that “he has that fatal combination for women between being handsome and mysterious.

“I think he’s attractive, an interesting guy,” she said. “When I first met him he caught my attention as a very intelligent person, very cultured and very austere,” she said.

After winning Argentine league titles with Newell’s Old Boys at the beginning of the 1990s, Bielsa was marked as one of Argentina’s top young coaches.

He graduated to become Argentine national boss in 1998 but his reputation took a knock when the team was knocked out of the 2002 World Cup finals at the group stage and he resigned two years later.

Bielsa’s current charges are many people’s outside bet at this World Cup.

The meticulous Argentine has built an incisive attack around striker Humberto Suazo, who top scored with 10 goals in the South American qualifiers.

Suazo is supported by elusive forwards such as Matias Fernandez and Jorge Valdivia, as well as wide men Alexis Sanchez and Jean Beausejour, with the latter scoring the winner against Honduras on Wednesday.

The defense is marshalled by Boca Juniors stopper Gary Medel, whose positioning sense makes up for his lack of stature.

Suazo’s fitness – he injured his left thigh against Israel in a pre-World Cup friendly and was rested against Honduras – could be key to the side’s hopes.

But if Bielsa can mastermind Chile’s progress into the latter stages of the tournament, his reputation as one of the world’s top coaches will be reinstated.
