Messi plays in charity match in Brazil (AP)
SAO PAULO (AP)—Argentine forward Lionel Messi has led a mixed team of
international and domestic players to a 3-3 draw in a charity match in
southeastern Brazil.
The 2009 FIFA world player of the year’s team included Brazilian-born Deco
of Portugal’s national team and former football star Careca.
They played Sunday in the city of Indaiatuba against a “Rest of the World”
team that included Rincon of Colombia and Amoroso of Brazil.
Messi stopped playing in the 10th minute of the second half after he scored
a goal that was ruled out for offside.
Proceeds from the game were to be donated to a nonprofit organization
founded by Deco that promotes the social inclusion of underprivileged children
through educational, sport and cultural projects.

Klose on bench out for third-place match (AP)
PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa (AP)—Miroslav Klose’s aching back prevented him
from playing in the third-place playoff against Uruguay on Saturday.
Germany won 3-2.
Klose is one goal shy of Brazilian forward Ronaldo’s World Cup record of 15.
Cacau replaced Klose, who has four goals in this tournament.
Germany coach Joachim Loew was forced to make five changes to his team.
Defender Philipp Lahm and forward Lukas Podolski were out with the flu. Loew
also has the flu but was on the bench. Backup striker Mario Gomez also has the
flu.
Klose scored five goals in each of his previous two World Cups. He and
Thomas Mueller led Germany with four goals each heading into the match, but
Mueller scored early in the first half.
