Cameroon name newlook squad, poised to appoint coach (Reuters)

By Tansa Musa

YAOUNDE, Aug 3 (Reuters) – Cameroon have left eight players
involved in the World Cup out of their squad for next week’s
friendly against Poland.

The squad was named by former goalkeeper and deputy national
coach Jacques Songo’o but the Cameroon football association
(FECAFOOT) said a new coach would be named shortly.

“We should have a new coach latest Monday next week,”
FECAFOOT spokesman Martin Etonge said on Tuesday.

Former captain Rigobert Song retired from international
football on Sunday after playing for Cameroon 137 times.

“I took the decision to give up international football even
before the World Cup in South Africa because it is good to leave
things before they leave you,” Song said.

“I have decided to stop playing for the national team
because I think I have put in all I have … I am leaving the
national team with pride,” he added.

Cameroon failed to earn a point at the World Cup in South
Africa and coach Paul Le Guen quit after the tournament.

Goalkeepers Carlos Kameni and Souleymanou Hamidou, veteran
defender Geremi Njitap, midfielders Alexandre Song, Landry
Nguemo and Achille Emana, and strikers Achille Webo and
Mohamadou Idrissou were also left out.

Stephane Bikey, Henri Bedimo, Marcel Ndjeng, Patrick
Tignyemb and Jacques Zoua, who missed the South African
expedition, returned to the squad.

Capello: Agrees to change

Sky Sports sources understand that England head coach Fabio Capello has agreed to name his starting XI against Slovenia more than two hours in advance.

The Italian tactician has always left his team selection until the last possible moment by confirming his players two hours before the start of any match.

However, following England’s disappointment tournament in South Africa thus far, Capello’s methods have been questioned with some calling for more time between his team sheet being handed in and the big kick-off.

Rob Green let in a howler in England’s opener against the USA and it has been felt that the uncertainty surrounding who would start in goal played its part in the keeper’s poor concentration.

Following clear-the-air talks on Sunday evening in the wake of Friday’s horror show against Algeria, Capello, who has the FA’s backing, has agreed to change his style by naming his team earlier.

Even Capello’s position as England boss has been questioned after their remarkably woeful display against Algeria in Friday’s second Group C clash, but the FA insists his position is not in their thoughts.
