Rooney to return to Britain for tests (AP)

MANCHESTER, England (AP)—Wayne Rooney is scheduled to return to Britain on
Wednesday afternoon for tests on the ankle he injured in Manchester United’s
Champions League loss at Bayern Munich.

Rooney scored his 34th goal of the season in Munich but was injured in the
final minute of Tuesday’s match, moments before Bayern scored its second goal of
the 2-1 victory.

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson said Rooney would have a scan in the
next day or so and he hoped the injury was not as serious as first thought. But
the striker is extremely doubtful for Saturday’s Premier League match with
Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Okazaki, Japan’s lethal weapon

By any standards, Shinji Okazaki’s rise to prominence has been meteoric. He debuted just 18 months ago and since then the 23-year-old has already accrued 16 goals at a strike rate of better than a goal every other game.

Last calendar year proved memorable for Okazaki who scored 15 times for Samurai Blue, including firing the momentous goal against Uzbekistan which sealed qualification for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™. His scoring tally also earned him extra recognition after being named as having the year’s top international goal tally by the Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS).

Japan have perhaps found a retort to critics of their goal return in the diminutive striker, perhaps their most promising forward since Kazuyoshi Miura. But for Okazaki, his new status just adds to his motivation for more goals. “I do not think I’m the team’s ace striker. But in terms of improving my skills, feeling pressure is perhaps not a bad thing,” he said. Read the rest of this entry »

Capello’s England plans hit by scandals (AP)

LONDON (AP)—As if trying to end England’s 44-year-old trophy drought wasn’t a
big enough task, Fabio Capello has had to contend with off-field sagas causing
divisions in the dressing room.

What was an unusually straightforward qualification campaign for England—
with nine wins out of 10—has become a distant memory.

Of all the problems to disrupt Capello’s plans, he could never have foreseen
the crisis involving captain John Terry—that had an affair with the former
partner of teammate Wayne Bridge.

Not only was Terry publicly humiliated by being stripped of the captaincy,
but Bridge responded by refusing to play alongside the Chelsea center back,
signaling his international retirement.

Fergie downplays Rooney injury

With just over two months until the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, England’s star striker Wayne Rooney sustained an ankle injury on Tuesday at the end of Manchester United’s UEFA Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

Rooney, one of the world’s top players this season with a stunning 34 goals for United, hobbled off from the Allianz Arena in Munich following a clash with German international striker Mario Gomez. The injury is not just bad news for England, but also for club side United who face title challengers Chelsea in the English Premier League on Saturday. Read the rest of this entry »
